Rainwater Harvesting

Fit gutters and downpipes on all your farm buildings to direct rainwater into tanks or reservoirs. Even a modest roof can collect thousands of litres across a rainy season. That stored water can fill gaps between rains and reduce how much you need to pump during dry spells.

Mulching for Moisture

Lay a 5 to 10 cm layer of organic mulch — dry grass, straw, or crop residues — around your plants. Mulch reduces soil evaporation by 25 to 40% and keeps soil temperatures more stable for roots. As it breaks down, it also returns organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

Smart Watering Decisions

Before you irrigate, push your finger 2 cm into the soil — if it is dry, it is time to water. Group crops by their water needs so thirsty plants like tomatoes and cabbages get frequent irrigation without wasting water on drought-tolerant crops nearby. In drier areas, sunken beds concentrate water directly at the root zone where your plants need it most.
