Market Timing Strategies
What You’ll Learn
Plant counter-seasonally when you can, so you harvest and sell when supply is low and prices are strongest.
Line up 2 to 3 reliable buyers before your crop is ready — do not wait until harvest to look for markets.
Stagger your planting in 2 to 3 week intervals to earn a steady income stream rather than one lump sum.
Counter-Seasonal Planting
When everyone plants at the same time, prices crash at harvest because the market is flooded. Counter-seasonal planting means timing your crop to mature when other farmers are not supplying and prices are strong. For example, onions planted in October to November can be cured and sold in January to February, when off-season prices are significantly higher.
Building Buyer Relationships
Line up your market before your crop is ready to harvest. Identify 2 to 3 consistent buyers — traders, restaurants, institutions — and build the relationship during the growing season. Going into harvest with committed buyers takes the pressure off selling at whatever price is on offer the day you pick.
Staggered Planting
Rather than planting everything at once, stagger your planting dates in 2 to 3 week intervals. This gives you a continuous harvest spread over months instead of one large flush that strains your labour and floods your local market. Consistent supply also makes you a more dependable partner for buyers, which strengthens relationships and often supports better prices.
